How to Deal with Hogs During Deer Season
Every year, it seems as though the feral hog population in the United States climbs to higher and higher peaks. These pigs are notorious for being able to live just about anywhere, and can very quickly ruin a deer hunt if you are not prepared. So if you have a lot of feral hogs in your favorite deer hunting spot, what do you do?
Luckily there are a few things you can do in order to help manage the impact that the pigs will have on your area, as well as your hunt. Let’s go over a few simple tips to help deal with hogs during the deer season!
Baiting Hogs
Baiting is a great method for killing or trapping problem hogs in an area. Hogs have an incredible sense of smell, and can be easily drawn to a specific area from anything that emits a strong odor. There are plenty of easy to make baits that you can use, as well as store bought options that can help lure hogs out of your deer area during the season, keeping them from screwing up your hunt!
Once the pigs are attracted to the smell, you can then either kill them or trap them in order to get rid of them. If you don’t want to do either one, sometimes having a good hog bait is enough to keep them out of your favorite deer hunting spot!
Trapping Hogs
Like we mentioned before, trapping is one of the most effective methods of removing wild pigs from an area. Trapping is so effective because, unlike hunting, it allows you to remove large numbers of hogs in a short amount of time. By removing large numbers at once, you have a much better chance of reducing their numbers enough to make a difference in your deer hunting areas.
The downside of trapping is that it will generally take a lot of time, money, and effort to do it efficentially. But for those that want the best form of wild hog management,a decent amount of time with some serious trapping can make the biggest dent in their population.
Hunting Hogs
Wild hogs are very hunting pressure sensitive, so putting some pressure on them before your deer season may run them off for a period of time and give you uninterrupted deer hunting. Just remember, deer are also hunting pressure sensitive too. In your attempt to push the hogs off of your property before or during the deer season, be careful and aware of where the deer are as well.
Final Thoughts
Dealing with wild hogs can be a little challenging, but by putting in a little bit of work before, during, and after deer season you can rest assured that they will not be bothering you during the season. Whether it is baiting, trapping, or hunting (or a combination of the three) you can better deal with hogs during your next deer season!
