Turkey’s are Ready for Spring Hunting Season, are You?

With warmer weather and springtime fast approaching, many of us hunters are starting to turn our thoughts to turkey hunting. But after a long year of not chasing turkeys, a lot of us might feel a little rusty and not know where to get started. Do you feel ready for this turkey season? If not, you are not alone!

So what can you do in order to better prepare for the spring turkey season? Luckily there are plenty of simple and basic tricks that you can use to get ready in a hurry and be prepared to put a big tom on the ground this spring.

Practice Your Calling

One of the biggest aspects of spring turkey hunting is calling to birds. Calling a gobbler is the number one way of killing a bird, so you must practice a little in order to do it properly. While you do not need to be an expert turkey caller in order to fool a big tom, it does help to know what you are doing and make good sounds consistently. Don’t be afraid of picking up those calls before the season starts and get a little practice in!

Prepare Your Gear

Most turkey hunters will carry a lot of gear, so turkey vests are extremely common amongst serious bird hunters. A good turkey vest will be comfortable and able to carry all of the essential gear that you will need for turkey hunting. So what all should you bring? First, don’t forget your turkey calls that you have been practicing with!

Besides a variety of turkey calls, try to bring along a sharp knife, a mask, some gloves, extra shotshells, a flashlight or headlamp, a first aid kit, turkey decoys, and your hunting license and tag. You might also want to bring along plenty of water and some snacks for the hunting trip, as well as any other necessities that you might need.

Do Some Scouting

Scouting is the secret ingredient to success on any hunt. For turkeys, a few simple scouting trips can quickly make the difference between a successful hunt and going home with a tag in your pocket. Look over your maps and identify potential areas that the birds might like. The key is to find the best roosting areas in your location, as the turkeys will not venture too far from good roosting trees that they are using consistently.

In addition to finding their roosting trees, other things to look for and make note of are tracks, droppings, and food sources. Finding well-used travel routes in between roosting areas and food sources can be absolutely golden come hunting season!

Final Thoughts

Many of us might not feel prepared for this upcoming spring turkey season, but there is a way to quickly get ready for a good season. By doing these three simple things, you will no doubt be better prepared for turkey season and find a lot more success while out in the woods!
